One Big Decision

Once Mama receives her check in the mail the question over who will receive money from the check arises. This point has been brought up before but now Mama realizes she needs to make her decision. The question I have is who is Mama going to give the money too? What is going to be her final decision? Mama tries to ignore the fact that she is going to have to make a large decision soon. On page 69 it states “I spec if it wasn’t for you all… I would just put that money away or give it to the church or something” (Hansberry). Mama is trying to walk around the idea that she needs to decide who to give her money too. I think that all of the members in the family are being greedy about the money from Mama. In the end it is her money and she should do what she wants to do with it. If she wants to give the money to church then she should. She should not feel obligated to give the money to her daughter and son. I would love to hear what other people think.

  1. I completely agree with you here Risa. Everyone in the story is constantly worrying about what Mama will do with the $10,000 check. But really, Mama is the only one who should be worrying about the money because it is her money. It's not Walter's money or Beneatha's money or Ruth's money; it's Mama's and she is the only one who should be worrying about it. When she finally decides to use the money for a new house, everyone is sort of disoriented. Mama just went out of the apartment without telling anyone, and then when she comes back she tells everyone she bought a new house so calm and nonchalantly. Ruth is the one who sees this as a good thing up until she makes the point that it is in a white neighborhood. This brings down the whole mood of the story because at this point in time, black families are not exactly welcomed in white neighborhoods. However, I believe this was the best investment Mama could have made because now there will be no fighting between Beneatha and Walter. Hopefully, this house will be beneficial to everyone in the family.

  2. I agree that Mama's decision to purchase a new house for the Younger family was a smart one. She might have taken her loved ones out of their comfort zones by moving into a white neighborhood, yet they will have many opportunities in this new area. With a new member of the family possibly coming into play the extra bedroom in the new house is essential. However, a question that I am asking myself is how much money was the house? If the house payments ends up costing a majority of the 10,000 dollars, then how much of it is to be put away for Beneatha's college (a section that Mama insists would be included). As Peter mentioned, Beneatha and Walter might not fight with each other as much about the topic because Walter got none of it and Beneatha will hardly get anything. Therefore, Mama did made the right decision by spending her money on a new house for her loved ones.

  3. I agree with you as well. Beneatha acts as if she wants Mama to have the money, but she knows the money will go towards her college. Walter wants it for his liquor store. Everybody wants it for themselves. I believe Mama made the right choice by buying the house although it is a risky decision. It will stop a lot of the fighting in the house because there will be more room. Walter will probably still hold it as a grudge over Mama if something bad does happen. Her choice was a good medium.

  4. I agree with you in the sense that Mama should be able to use the money for what she believes is right, but she should have consulted with her family and children before going right out and buying the house. I believe she did do the right thing by buying a house for the whole family. In my opinion, giving the money to the church would have been the wrong choice. The family is not living comfortably in their overcrowded apartment. If Mama was willing to give that money away to the church she could have given it to Walter to make the investment. At least in this case, they possibly could have made a profit.
