Walters Mistake

I believe that Walter made a big mistake by giving the money to the guy who was going to open the liquor store with him.  I understand that Walter thought this would be the best thing for his family, but I believe it was too big of a risk.  If he wanted this to be done the right way he should have been more involved in the process instead of handing his money off to someone who could not be trusted.  I also blame Mama for the situation they are currently in.  She knew that Walter has been passionate about opening this liquor store, but she still trusted him to bring the money to the bank for the down payment on the house.  If Mama had brought the money to the bank herself, they would not be in this situation.  Now, they don't have the house to move into, or the liquor store to be opened.  If they are unable to get the money back, they suffered a huge loss and Walter is to blame for throwing the money away.

  2. I agree with you. I think Walter's self esteem drives him. As a man in the 50's, he is supposed to be the main financial carrier of the family, yet Mama is the matriarch. He cares only about money, though I think multiple people are to blame Mama trusts him more than she should, and she was rather blunt when telling him that she would refuse to open the liquor store. Of course, Walter should take most of the blame because he is culpable for his detrimental actions. I also blame the disastrous gender roles of 1950's. Though women were the most affected, men were also forced to define masculinity. Obviously those who could not live up to those standards would be seen as of less worth. Walter has potential, but he is held back by race, mental health, and people who create false opportunity in his life. He does have emotional problems that create his naive personality. However, If i were in his situation,I would be just as ambitious.

  3. I believe Mama was an optimist in this scenario. Mama trusted Walter to bring the down payment to the bank. It never even crossed her mind that he would betray her like he did. Walter destroyed Mama’s expectations and trust by blindly following his instincts with no regard to Mama or the family. Opening the liquor store is to Walter as the house is to Mama. Walter was to selfish to see that the liquor store was a risky investment, too risky for a family already down on their luck financially. Mama will never hold the same regard for Walter again , and it is of no fault but his own.

  4. I agree with you on this. Walter chose to put his trust and all of the money for the family into a deal for a liquor store that was never truly set in stone. Mama is also at fault here majorly. She promised to put away a set amount of money for Beneatha, but never did. Should Mama and Walter share the blame half and half? Or should it all be put on Walter?
